I'm looking for something along the lines of Grim Fandango or Monkey Island for a 13 year old.

Ignore any answers in the famous slogan on yahoo answers "World of Warcraft". Although this is a great game for teenagers, it is not classified as an adventure game for which you are desiring.
I completely understand the type of genre you are looking for. I myself like Grim Fandango and thought it was pretty hilarious with good control. Based on what you are looking for, I really like the Alone in the Dark series, and you can get the entire trilogy for pretty cheap.
I tell you what, if he is a 13 year old and like adventure games, there is a hidden gem that is a bit older, but you can take control of a roach! It is called Bad Mojo and was probably one of the neatest adventure games I have ever played for the PC. You have full control over the main character a roach, and this game is in a surreal environment, where you must solve puzzles such as getting around obstacles, fixing radio wires with cunning smarts. Bad Mojo would be right up his alley if he likes bugs trust me!
Indiana Jones series made by Lucas Arts might also be a good choice for him. I will save this question and maybe if you can tell me what he prefers to do in adventure games I can add on more. I will include info on Bad Mojo for you to research on, it is a great game!

I have alot of favorite PC games but i really like World of Warcraft.
