Nutritionally, babies do not need anything but breast milk and/or formula until they are about 6 months old. When a baby is able to sit well, has good control of his head movements, has lost his natural tongue-thrust reflex (doesn't push his tongue against the spoon), and is showing interest when you eat by smacking his lips, opening his mouth, and reaching then he will be ready to begin solids. Frequent first solid food is infant rice cereal. Early introduction of solid food has been linked to food allergies, obesity, and stomach trouble such as constipation. It is not true that introducing cereal early will help a baby sleep longer.

I believe that all children are different. The doctors reccommend that cereal be introduced between four and six months of age. None of my three children would wait that long. My oldest daughter started cereal at 3 months...my second daughter at one month, and my son at two months. I would say that when they drink a six or eight ounce bottle and are still hungry an hour later, that is a good time to start with a little cereal. Remember that every child is different and you know your child best.

10 weeks old is way too young to give anything but formula/breastmilk. The first 3 months, their stomachs and digestive systems are still developing and probably won't be able to tolerate it. Unless the pediatrician says otherwise, rice cereal should start at 4 months. Good luck!

My son is 3 months old and I just fed him his first rice cereal yesterday. My pediatrician told me that when 8 ounces of formula wasn't good enough for him, then its time for some cereal. You can either put a tablespoon in the baby's bottle or mix a tablespoon of cereal with formula or breastmilk and feed it to her/him. Most babies have a hard time eating off a spoon first off, so you may want to try it in the bottle first. Don't listen to what people say. When your baby is ready, you will know. Good Luck!!

Wow, 10 weeks? Both of my children didn't start on solids till around 6-8 months. My daughter didn't like cereal at all, she started on some solids at around 8 months. My son didn't have solids till around 6 months.
Careful about starting too early, baby's stomach isn't ready.

Solid foods should not be started until around 6 months of age. All a baby needs until the middle of the first year is breastmilk or formula. Their little tummies don't have the enzymes needed to digest anything else earlier. And starting solids too early puts baby at risk of allergies, diabetes and obesity.

I would not give him cereal at 10 wks. My doctor told me that you should because it stretches their stomach and could lead to them being fat. Also, their little tummies are not developed enough to digest it so it made my son fussy. I think when they are about 4 months you canstart to introduce cereal. But I would always ask my doctor.

You shouldn't start cereal until your baby is at least 4 months (for formula-fed) or try to wait 6 months (for breast-fed). Reason why is because their digestive tracts aren't developed enought to digest solid food. Then when you do start, make sure you try one food at a time for at least 3-5 days.
