I know in high school we read "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, which was published in 1958, and is about the life of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion throughout the nine villages of the Igbo ethnic group of Umuofia in Nigeria, Africa, his three wives, his children (mainly concerning his oldest son Nwoye and his favorite daughter Ezinma), and the influences of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on his traditional Igbo (archaically spelled "Ibo") community during an unspecified time in the late 1800s or early 1900s.
I cannot be sure if this is the book to which you are referring, as you didn't provide a lot of detail, but this is a very good book and, even if it isn't the book you were looking for, I recommend picking up a copy.

If it was an English Village, it's probably Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson, which I know was a set- book in the late seventies. Or possibly Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee. They are both worth a re-read:much less dull if you're an adult.

You need to be more specific. There are a lot of books that might fit that description, but I wouldn't consider them dull. For example, The Scarlett Letter, The Crucible, etc. Give us a little more info.

"it was about a village and the characters in a village"
I think you miught need to be more specific. ie. some thing that happened in the book.
Good luck!

What era was the book set in? The above suggestions are all good - but if it were set in an earlier time I would suggest Cranford.
