NO, according to the US Department of State's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
*************************************************
HOWEVER, if you are going to get a new passport or renew one AND you are going to travel to Bahamas in early 2007, you may be eligible for a rebate of 100% of your US Passport application fees. Thus, even though you don't need one, if you are staying overnight in the Bahamas for at least 2 nights in Nassau, you should get your US Passport now for free!

You only need one in,2007 if you are flying. In 2008, you will need one for cruising. I am cruising the end of March, I sent in for a passport a month ago, even though I didn't need it now, I will in the future. My only concern is that they kept my birth certificate when I applied. They said I will get it back with my passport. If they don't come within 2 weeks of boarding I'll have to buy another birth certificate.

Yes, you have to go through customs when leaving the bahamas. You should go ahead and go apply for your passport. I think its taking about 2 months from the time you request the passport before you actually get it. Good luck!

NO,YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT TO TRAVEL TO THE BAHAMAS BY SHIP UNTIL JANUARY OF 2008. (THAT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE) IT WAS 2007 BUT THEY RECENTLY CHANGED IT TO 2008. IF YOU TRAVEL BY AIR I BELIEVE IT'S STILL 2007. THE REASON I KNOW THIS IS BECAUSE I AM ACTUALLY GOIN GONA CRUISE WITH MY COMPANY THIS WEEK AND INITIALLY WE ALL NEEDED PASSPORTS BUT OF COURSE THAT CHANGED THE DAY I WENT TO GET MINE AND I ALREADY PAID THE 100 PLUS DOLLARS FOR IT. WE'RE TRAVELING FROM MIAMI TO NASSAU. ALSO YOU CAN GO ON LINE TO ONE OF THE CRUISE LINES AND IT WILL CONFIRM THIS INFO.
