We started using a walker when she was about 7 months old. She had started standing up by herself, started getting antsy when we would put her in her bouncy seat, and would only stand the swing for a certain amount of time. Mostly, I would hold her, but there were times when I would have her with me in a room and be tending to the house (or to myself... sometimes a mom just has to pee!).

Our daughter had started pulling herself up to a stand at about the time that we started using it. My older kids started using walkers at about the same time in their development (when they were pulling themselves up to a stand). I don't think it's an age thing, so much as a development thing. If you feel that your child is ready, go for it. If you know that you will eventually use a walker for the baby, get it now and see how she does. If it doesn't seem to be working out, put it away for a week or so, then take it back out and see what happens.

All that being said... yes, a walker can be a dangerous thing. However, the danger comes not from the walker itself, but from parents who will set their babies in them and walk away. Walkers should never be used near stairs (that the walker could fall down, baby and all). Even stairs that only have one or two steps to them can be dangerous to a baby in a walker. But it is not the steps that makes the walker dangerous, it is not the walker itself that is the danger... it is unattentative parents who make walkers dangerous.

Oh, and walkers are most certainly not "taken off the market"! We walked right into Babies R Us and bought a brand new walker just a few months ago. (NOTE: that reads "walker" not "exersaucer").

PS: All four of my children use or have used a walker. My three older kids are all nearly grown and walk perfectly well and never had a fall or other injury from being in the walker. Just FYI.

Good luck!

6 months is okay to put them in the walker. They can't walk yet, but they like to stand and bounce up and down in once spot. They get so excited. You can give them a couple of toys on their tray and they are happy. Just don't use the walker anywhere there are stairs! If it looks like she is having fun and doesn't seem unhappy I wouldn't worry about it, but if her foot looks like it is giving out on her and she is not doing it on purpose then hold off for a month until she gets a bit stronger.

I have a 7 month old granddaughter that used an exerciser (they have stairs going up and down) and they put her in it around 4 months. At about 6 months, she wanted OUT --- she found out that mobility was a whole lot more fun ---- crawling! She is starting to pull up and walk along the furniture already. Just watch out for your daughter's foot. Check with your doctor and wear high topped shoes (to keep the ankle from twisting).

My daughter is 4 1/2 months old and I put her in her walker already she can walk yet but she likes to stand, I also have an exersaucer for her and she loves that. I would suggest starting with the exersaucer and see how she does then move on to the walker. Good Luck

Walkers are a safety hazard! Please don't use one. In fact, I just saw a report on my local news channel. They tested a bunch of styles and they tip easily and are just dangerous.

I seem to remember hearing that they hinder rather than help the walking process, but I'm not sure where I heard that.

An exersaucer is better if you want them to suport and entertain themselves. I tried this a 6 months because that's when my baby started sitting up by herself. Otherwise, just let her learn to pull up on furniture. Hold his hands and try walking her across the floor if she seems ready for that.

Maybe she just hasn't gotten her balance yet but I would definately ask her doctor. My son started in a walker as soon as he could start pushing up. He didn't walk in it until much later. He didn't walk until he was around 11 months but every child is different, so I've found out!

I started putting my daughter in a stationary entertainer at 4 months and she loved it. She'd only stay in it for about 15 min a day 2 rarely 3 times a day but it gave me cleaning, and shower and cooking time.

I think you should wait to your baby make 9 months or 10 months that is the best time to put babies in walkers.

My sister has twins and the doctor just told her that walkers are bad b/c it teaches them to walk at a forward slant.
But I don't really agree - we all grew up in walkers and I never see people walking slanted :)

But I agree that 6 months is a good age. Babies love them!
