Myself and 14 other collge students have been choosen to travel to the southern region of the US and visit different places that were important in the fight for civil rights. We have received a numerous amount of money from our University (cal poly pomona) and are putting in our own money. We need 7000 dollars more though. What can we do to raise this money in about 2.5 months? Any suggestions would help. Thanks alot.

These are really good ideas. Im not sure of all but the majority of us are involved on campus and have jobs to. I personally am President of a club on campus, work and have 6 classes + doing hair on the side. So for the people who said get a job... "uuuuuh, check"...

i've done fundraising on several international medical trips and we've done a variety of things to raise funds. When you're trying to raise a lot of money, bake sales and car washes just don't cut it! 1) Contact the person(s) responsible for the alumni newsletters and see if you can send out a request for donations. If you can limit it to certain groups you may have better luck and not waste time/funding. We limit our requests to alumni in the medical field and have had good responses in the past! 2) Host a party at a local bar/club. The clubs usually will have drink specials and they will give us a portion of all drink sales and the door fee in exchange for promoting their club in advertisements. Then we advertise the party (facebook, put up flyers, etc). We've made over $1000 in one night and I go to a really small college so this is an excellent way of making money if you pick a good night! 3) Write in for a grant. Do a search for grants~you'd be surprised what they have money for! I'm not exactly sure of grants for civil rights but we've found lots of money/donations from pharmaceutical companies and public institutions. Just start looking! 4) I haven't done this one because I just thought of it, but host a poker tournament or a casino night for your university. Everyone pays a entry fee (which goes to your cause) and gets a set amount of chips (check out the laws in your state before you do this!). Have local businesses donate gift certificates or items for the winner. Good luck!

What are you going to do with the knowledge you gain? (i.e. put together a show and presentation that you could give at elementary schools). You might be able to get a study grant from the NAACP.

You might try "volunteer group" days at your local Sonic - we've had groups of teens earn about $400 to $500 in just a half day's work.

Also some restaurants offer fund raising days and give you 15% of the take. You could advertise on campus to drive business to the restaurant.

A raffle is a good idea but very legally scary.

Are there occasions around campus (or in the dorms) where you could sell candy, cokes and so forth? Sounds like a little bit but can add up.

Trying to raise that much money will be hard, but there is no doubt that you cant do it! When we were in need of cash quick, we did a waitress switch! This is where you call the local restaurants, and see if there is a Friday or Saturday night ((Those are the best)) that you and your friends can swap places with the waitresses, the restaurant gets all the money, however YOU get the tips! We do this and put it in the paper, and talk about it on the radio, if you get the news out you get a great crowed and there willing to put money out to help you! Plus it is a lot of fun, and team building!

the best advice anyone ever told me about asking for money is to never ask for money- ask for money and you get advice, ask for advice and you get money ;)

ask a few local restaurants if you can do a "taste of
or you can ask restaurants to host "specials" on their menus and you get a small fee when someone buys them- or have them as a special and on that day they get a free wait staff ala you and your organization.

Do a raffle. Get local businesses to donate prizes and sell tickets.
