I've got 3 days in the Rome vicinity, and I would like to spend one of those exploring Naples bay. Is it possible to visit Ercolano for a few hours, Pompei for a few and Capri for a few hours?

If you're based in Rome in only one day you can visit just one of those places.If I were you I would limit my choice between Capri and Pompei (Ercolano is just a bad copy of Pompei, 100 times less interesting).Also the time of yr visit would contribute to take a decision. If in spring or fall I would go to Capri. If in summer or in winter I would go to Pompei since Capri is too crowded in July/August and very sad in wintertime.
Don't believe people that say you can do all the 3 in one day.
That's impossible, even if you are content with arriving in one place and leaving it to the other one after 10 minutes...!!!

First and foremost, that is ABSOLUTELY not possible if your starting point is Rome. No way, no how. However, if you spent a night in Naples and woke up really early that morning you MIGHT be able to squeeze in all those sites IF you travel in the high season when boat service is more frequent. Be forewarned that this itinerary is ridiculously jam-packed and won't leave you any time for enjoying what you're seeing. You'll just be traveling around, waiting in lines at entraces and then rushing through the sights on yoru way to the next attraction.
If you started in Naples, you could presumably take the first boat to Capri in the morning. Once you'd seen Capri you could take a boat to Sorrento and from there go to Pompeii on the Circumvesuviana (it's easier to walk from the Sorrento port to the station than to get from the Naples port to the station, which is why I suggest going back that way). If you still have time after Pompeii stop at Herculaneum on your way back to Naples (it's a later stop on the Circumvesuviana line).
Honestly, I suggest overnighting in Naples and skipping Herculaneum. Unless you're passionate about petrified wood it's quite similar to Pompeii.

Yes, but it'll be tight. The traghetti (ferries) to Capri take time, but they do shuttle back and forth frequently out of Naples. Pompeii is rather large nowadays; it has more than doubled in area since the 1960's when I first walked through it.
I guess my question is, why not pick one and spend a great day at it? If you don't, you'll be rushing from place to place and won't have time to really enjoy each one.

I am Irish, but I live in Italy as my wife is from Naples.
Well, you would need a 96 hour day to do all the things you plan to do. It is simply not viable in 24 hours.
But, if you have to choose just one place to go to, make it Pompeii. Firstly because it is such a marvel, and MUCH MUCH bigger than you would think. In a full day you will see less than a tenth of it.
Go there by public transport/organised trip and NOT by car. There is simply nowhere to park without paying $100US for the privilege of leaving your car on the side of the road for the afternoon. You have been warned.
Have fun and watch your pockets/valuables in Naples.

yeah its possible just depends on how fast you can move to each place and how much sleep you are welling to sacrafice. honestly you need to get. the DVD of Pink Floyd at pompei, it really shows you how great of a place and advance a place like that was from its time
