I figure since I will be in South Africa for 3 weeks, I would like to see as much as I can, however, some of the people I am going with would also like to go to Egypt as well. Is it reasonable to go to Cairo for the weekend?

I do know my geography! I understand that Egypt is in the North and SA is in the south. I just wanted to know if it would be worth stopping by in Egypt on my way in or out of SA.

Yes, you can go to Egypt from SA, but you should check out the VISA requirements, prior to your trip. You can obtain one from any major point of entry, but I would advise against doing that. If you have the time, just go to the Egyptian Embassy or Consulate General in your country and apply for one from there. That way, you have it in hand before going there from SA. I would hate to see you spend the money to fly there only to be turned away because you couldn't obtain one from your point of entry.

I travel extensively and even though there are many countries where I can obtain an airport VISA, I choose to get it before I depart on my trip. This way, I know that there shouldn't be any immigration issues once I arrive.

Where are you coming from? Egypt is approximately a 9 hour flight from South Africa, so if you plan to fly there for the weekend and then back to SA, I would say it is not worth it. It becomes a whole new trip. Egypt is not even close to SA. Hope you have a great trip :)

South Africa is in the south and Egypt in the north. If you really want to go then I would go for a week and do it either before you go to South Africa or on your way back home as the flight there would be about 8/9 hours from South Africa.

It may not be realistic to go from South Africa to Egypt for the weekend. Remember you will be crossing the continent of Africa from the extreme south to the extreme north diagonally. Africa may look small on a map but a flight from Johannesburg to Cairo could take up to 9 hours! So assuming you get your flights sorted out, by the time you reach your destination you will barley have time to rest from your long flight to head back to the airport for your flight back!

Good Luck!

its not advisable to go to egypt from sa just for the weekend, its about a 9 hour flight and not very cheap.if you want to kill 2 birds with 1 stone , take a stop over in egypt on your way there or back from sa.
plus there is a lot 2 see in egypt just a weekend isnt sufficient.

Don't you have a map ???
It's like asking I'm going to Canada for three weeks, is it possible to go to Brazil for the weekend ?

Of course it is possible, but have you any idea how big South Africa is and how much there is to see ?
You need the full three weeks if you want to visit things in South Africa and travel around.

If you have the money for the flight, it is okay with me. Matter of fact, I wish I could go along. Have fun.
