I sometimes speak and write in an articulate manner and forget that my respect for the English language is a lot less than the next person. I express my self in a way to seem a lot amateurish in the writing field and until now I have realized the damage it can cause to one’s reputation as a writer an I apologize to those who had to witness my broken tongue and thank the few who was unable to perceive my penmanship. Thank you.

Good for you for realizing what many authors (and editors) have been trying to tell everyone on these chat sites for ages! regardless of the informality of Internet chat sites (of which Answers is one of many!), writers (chatters?) should still try to use a better quality of language. There are some of us who prefer to use quality linguistic skills rather than "slang gibberish". To my mind the use of slang is nothing less than disrespect firstly for the language we use, but secondly also towards the readers of these questions and answers. You would seldom find books published in slang (unless it is for a specific purpose in a specific genre where it would be acceptable). Yahoo has even kindly provided a spell check facility - use it for goodness sake! PS: In your last sentence you should have said: "... few who WERE unable . . ." (Few = plural).

Well, slang isn't a sin; it is the evolution of our language. Though I do have to agree with the rest that if your career or current affairs depend on writing, use proper grammar. A good book that can help is "Writing from A to Z: The Easy-to-Use reference Handbook" published by McGrawHill. It is as its title proclaims: easy to use. And if you use slang in a chatt room or else and they tell you you are uneducated or amateurish, don't listen. The English language has mutated and gotten shorter over the years, and it will grow or shrink more depending on the need of humanity. You should also check out Pinker's "The Language Instinct," a pretty interesting book about the history and science behind humanity and language.

You just have to be aware of the audience you are speaking, or writing, to. Its ok to use slang when you are with your friends, but not when you are presenting something for a grade, or for a business. The proper use of language, spoken and written, is often used as an indicator of ones education level, as well as their maturity level. Good luck in the future!

I agree that the way people speak often influences the way peope write. Most of the spelling and grammar mistakes I see are common misprounciations. It is admirable that you are attempting to improve.

I'm not totally sure what the question actually is but if it's why do so many people not use proper grammar. In England it's because it's not taught properly in schools.
