You must get a BS or BA degree to be a teacher, and in some states you need a MS, MEd or MAT to be a Secondary school teacher.
You do not have to start at a university. In many states they have programs where you can start at your local community college and when you finish your Associates degree you can transfer all your credits to the State University and finish your degree at the university. THis is a good deal for many people who have limited finances or need to stay near home for other reasons.
There is no point in going to an expensive private school to learn to be a teacher. They often do not have the exact courses you need and they cost WAY more. The people at your local community college would be happy to talk to you about how the teacher education program works at their school.

If you want to be a K-12 teacher in the US, you need to attend a four-year university or college and get a bachelor's degree.

if you want to start asap, you can become a substitute by just getting any AA from a community college. which isnt bad. my friend got her associates at 18 and got her first job at $12 an hour being a sub.
but the best education, information, and beginnings-personally-are from a university. and lots of universities have wonderful education colleges and programs
