I believe it's because of geographic isolation. The two have become two different species.

Even though they are both reptiles, they are different species. Animals can look quite a bit alike, but be very different genetically. Its not like two different breeds of dogs breeding, as they are both the same species.

Because they are different genetically, even though they look very similar. The same holds true for lions and tigers, as they are both feline, but very different. There have been cases of lions being bred with tigers in captivity, resulting in a striped lion known as a liger, but it is very rare to see one in nature.
