it can be washed no problem...just don't use bleach, it's too harsh on those soft feathers. it's the DRYING that's the trick. You would be better off taking it to the self-serve laundromat...they have HUGE dryers there.......
the bigger the dryer , the better........and, put a few tennis balls ( not sneakers, they're too heavy )...in the dryer too....they will bounce around and " fluff " the blanket so it dries correctly.
if you dry it in a dryer that is too small, without the balls....it will dry all bunched up....with the feathers in globs in the corners....

You can wash a goose down but, you will need to put a clean tennis shoe in the dryer when drying it. This will help it to dry faster and make it fluffy again. If you can not dry it in a dryer then, you will probably want to spray it with the febreeze when you line dry it. Sometimes goose downs get a smell to them because (this sounds bad but) some of the feathers still have a little blood on the ends. I use cheer detergent and some oxy clean when I wash mine. The secret is the shoe. Make sure there are no holes in your goose down or you will really have a mess.

This has come up in Yahoo answers before and the best answer given was to dry clean it....BUT.. I don't think this is the best way at all.. I think you should use soap and water and do it at home.. This site below gives you several ideas as to how to handle this plus other washing issues.. The easiest way is to cover the comforter with a cover once you have it cleaned and then you will only have the cover to wash. Read below.

The best thing to do is take it to the Dry Cleaners. You can wash them but your taking your chances on it coming out as good as it went in. You don't put them in the dryer - you have to hang dry it and then you have to do a lot of 'fluffing' to get the feathers seperated again. It's a lot easier to just use febreeze or take it to the dry cleaners - cost @$30 for cleaning but worth it!!

I also own a goose down comforter and use Febreeze, to freshen the comfortor. Although, your comfortor needs "cleaning" for stains etc. You can always take the comfortor to the Dry Cleaners! Atleast that's what I do. ~Good Luck~

My down comforter does say that it is machine washable. Follow any washing directions and be sure to use the delicate cycle. The feathers do however tend to clump. Be sure to dry it thoroughly in the dryer. Will have to rearrange in the dryer several times, and does take awhile to dry all the way
To freshen the comforter, I will occasionally put it in the dryer on a low heat setting with a fabric softener sheet. It fluffs it up well and freshens as well.

Take the blanket by the neck and twist. Stir for about 2min. Microwave on high for 8 min. Wash the comforter in machine.

When it comes to a down comforter, dont even toss it in the dryer. We had one and tried doing that and ended up with a load of feathers in the lint screen. Try calling dry cleaners and asking of they can do it. But, odds are you're goanna have to Fabreeze and live with it, or just toss it.

Although I don't have experience with comforters, I've washed and dried goose down pillows with good results.
