Take the check to the bank on which it is drawn and ask them if there are sufficient funds in the account to cash it. If there are, then cash the check.

There are many reports reference the "scams" going around. Many send a check advising the receiver they are one of several winners of the Irish Lottery, but the poststamp on the envelop is out of Canada. They request the person cash this check to cover the cost owed to the lottery to claim the money. They then request you write them a check in return.

Basically, you cash their check and then you send them a check covered by your account. Their check is from a fake account and will bounce. You won't know this for a few days though. You are then out $2300.

Anyway, check the postmark. Was there a letter attached?

I would check out www.snopes.com also.

DON'T DO IT, it's an age old scam. If the check is fake, you will lose money from your account for attempting to deposit a rubber check. Try to notify the sender immediately and if it sounds fishy, shred the check, but DO NOT deposit it under any circumstances.

Also, try notifying the bank noted on the check to determine if the account, routing number, and issuer is legitimate.

sounds like a scam to me. You should be able to cash that check at your bank...BUT I'm sure that the check will not clear the main banking system. Then it will be returned, and YOU will be responsible to repay the bank the amount of that check.
