My friends dad gave me a job in a time of need but after the first couple of weeks now i'm realizing that i hate it! i hate everything about it and i've been in tears after leaving work the past couple of times. it's just a hostess job at a nice restaurant and i would normally just quit but i promised my friends dad, one of the managers, that i would give a two weeks notice. i've never actually done one before and i'm not sure as to what i should say in the letter, would much prefer a letter vs. talking with anyone ( they can all be pretty mean). i wanna tell them in some way that it's just not the job for me, any advice?

Since it is a friend of the family, you want be very nice so there is no resentment.

"Dear______

I very much appreciate the opportunity of working for______. However, I am finding that this position is not the best application of my skills. Please consider this letter my 2 weeks notice for terminating employment.

Sincerely,

_________

They may not have you stay the 2 weeks so be prepared for that.

The workforce can be a tough place, and you need to be tough in turn. Go to the manager today (in person) and tell them that you greatly appreciated having the opportunity to work there, but you've decided to leave for personal reasons. Ask them if you can resign now, or if they would like you to stay on another two weeks. I'm guessing they'll let you go now. Managers and Supervisors usually know when an employee is unhappy and an unhappy employee is not a good employee. You'll be doing them a favor. Follow up with a letter - again thanking them for taking you on when you were in a rough spot. You never know when you'll need a good reference so always leave on good terms.

You just write a simple letter that says something like "I wish you inform you that day X (two weeks from now) will be my last day of employment with Company X." and sign it. You don't even need to give an explanation, but I'd tell your friend's dad that you appreciate his help, but it just isn't working for you. You gotta grow up sometime.

If it's just a temporary "I need a job" job, why get so emotionally invested in it? Why let people bother you? Just say, "This isn't my real job and I will be out of here soon." and shrug it off. If you need a job, you better find another one before quitting this one.

You can write a resignation letter but if its your friend's dad you should also explain why you're leaving. Tell him you really appreciate the opportunity but its not exactly what you had in mind.

Just tell them in the letter you are searching out other opportunities at this time.
