8 Hours.... At least...

2007-01-08 04:58:04 · answer #1 · answered by cookiemonster5150@sbcglobal.net 2 · 0 0

I wish there were an answer; it's so individual. I have a 15 year old son whose sleep patterns are all over the place. Sometimes he needs 11 hours, and sometimes he's fine with 6. If your kid is still growing, a longer time is needed for sleep. Mine is not growing much anymore, but I would still really like him to get at least 8 hours sleep; but he just tends to not be able to fall asleep, or can't stay asleep.

According to the American Sleep Disorders Association, the average teenager needs around 9.5 hours of sleep per night, possibly because hormones that are critical to growth and sexual maturation are released mostly during slumber. Yet studies show that teenagers generally get an average of only 7.4 hours a night. This is far short of the desired quota for healthy teens.

I agree w/Beachbum009's answer: 9.5 hrs of sleep per night. 15-year-olds are still growing (usually), and not just body-wise, but their brains are developing too! When I was that age, I used to stay up all hours, reading and drawing. Then, I was ZONED the next day!

Finally my favorite teacher told me I was out of it and asked how much sleep I got. When he heard it was 4-5 hrs at most, he insisted I at least TRY getting 9 hrs! I did (I respected his opinion) and it made an incredible difference. I got MUCH better grades and didn't feel so "down" all the time!

Hi,

Most teens probably need about 9.5 hours of sleep, say experts, but the reality of a typical teen life: early morning soccer or swim practice, homework and perhaps a part-time job after school means that most are lucky to get 7-1/2 hours. Chronic sleep deprivation can affect mood and make it difficult for a teen to perform or even react appropriately. Since the amount of sleep everyone needs for optimum performance is very individual, how do you tell if your teen is getting enough sleep to live up to his or her learning potential? The treatment? Let him or her sleep whenever they can, including the weekends. If your teen wants to sleep until noon on Saturday, advises doctors, "let him." I have also a website for you. I hope this helps!

First: what is "average 15 yr old?
Someone involved in a bunch of activities or someone who isn't?
Either way, you should be getting 9.5-10 hrs of sleep
