A savings bond is perfect. You can also give a frame with a cross or a plaque with a saying. if you go to a gift shop or a christian store, you'll see lots of options.
For me, I most liked when my boys got savings bonds. I lost their father when I was 9 mos pregnant, so the money will really help us some day. Definitely don't do toys or clothes, the one year old will have a ton of that already.
You could also find if they have a savings plan 529 for the child and contribute to that. Or give a bible if the family is religious - with the baby's name on it. Anything personalized is also very special. Someone gave me a frame with my son's name and baptism date on it. I loved that.
Thoughtful/personalized gifts are the ones that stand out to me over time. There are also nice "goddaughter" type christmas ornaments, or poems/prayers - look online and search for "gift for goddaughter's baptism.
good luck.

A savings bond is a good idea and will be really appreciated when college bills start rolling in!

If you also want to add a small, more tangible gift along with the bond, how about a cute piggy bank, picture frame, or photo album?

Congratulations on being a Godmother!

I just baptized my daughter this past summer and my sister was my daughters godmother.
She flew from TX to WA State and brought with her the dress, the shoes, gold necklace, bracelet and a botle of Tequila for the godparents and parents to celebrate.
We are hispanic and so the dress was very pretty as well as the jewlery, not overdone at all.
I had other people bring gifts such as a beautiful frame, clothes, toys for her and her brother, and a childrens bible. I was not asking anybody to bring anything but all the gifts were lovely and very apreciated.
A savings bond would be great!!!!!!

Congratulations
and
God Bless

It is customary for the Godmother to buy jewlery for the baby. Even though some people don't like jewlery for babies, it is kept as a keep sake. A nice gold cross on a childs chain or an ID bracelet with the childs name on one side and the baptism date on the other side. Even if the mother doesn't use it right away, she can have it blessed at the baptism and keep it as a keepsake.

I would do a savings bond or gift check to go into savings for the child.

You could give the child a bible with an engraving, but she would not be able to read it until later, but you would be the person who gave her, her first bible. Also a cross that her Mom could let her wear when she get a little older. Even if it's just on Sunday's to church it would be something special from her God Mother.

God Bless
