Some employers have a dress code that requires women to wear hose and men to wear a jacket and tie. Do you think this is really an equal inconvienince? Some men claim this is fair. What do you think?

I'm a sales manager, and I would tend to think the women have it far worse.

I played football in college, and did far too much weight lifting in my youth. As a result, I lost my neck somewhere along the way. Because of this, ties and buttoned shirt collars are just a little to restricting for my taste. Also, I find buttoned cuffs an undesireable sensation.

My solution is to walk in the office in the moring fully dressed, say hello to the boss, then the first thing upon entering my office is to lose the jacket, loosen the tie, unbutton the top button, and reverse roll the sleeves.

Off-hand I don't know how many firms I've worked for, but I've performed this daily ritual for at least 20 years, and have never heard one complaint. Maybe it's the suspenders, I have no clue.

On the other hand, the women in the office don't have that luxury. In all the years I've worked in a corporate setting, I can't say I've ever noticed a woman in the office start the day in pantyhose and end the day without them...

I also must assume that unlike neckwear, bathroom breaks for a woman must be a logistical nightmare.

It is not really matching the same thing for each.
A tie, although a nuisance to the man because he must tie it and it is a "noose" around his neck, he can loosen it or even remove it easily at any time. It takes little time to put on, and it can even be a clip on if he wants to "cheat".

Now, pantyhose are flimsy, can run, and draw a certain amount of attention to the legs of a female. You never hear of the tie fetishes out there, but there are a LOT more pantyhose fetish people out there. Also, the hose require a woman to take more time to get ready for work. They are also more expensive as they will not last more than several (at best) wearings and cleanings (if they even survive the first wear). They can carry an odor to them. They can cause a woman to be very self conscious about herself as they can start to fall down, pinch or even as I said before, get a run in them. They are confining, and they can be very uncomfortable to some women.

The end result of both though, when forced to wear either a tie or hose, men and women then either love to wear them, or what seems to be more common, begin to HATE wearing that article.

I do not think it is fair for Men or Women however to make the comment that one sex has it easier unless they have tried both for a set period of time. Women sometimes also are required to wear ties, or scarfs.

Another point on the hose side, if a woman is wearing hose, it usually also includes the dress code of a skirt or dress and some height of heel shoe. These further place a woman into a different class than her male counter part as each and every one of these items does have a higher cost than male clothing. A man can wear the same suit more than once with different shirts, and usually the same pair of shoes. A woman, if she wears a dress may only be able to recycle her shoes and accessories to a different day.

Sorry, seeming to get off topic on this...

Ah, depends on what you're talking about. In an office, women should wear pantyhose with their skirts anyway because bare leg is a bit much for the workplace. However, it is pushing it a tad far to require a man to wear a jacket. The tie-and-dress shirt ensemble I understand, but a jacket...the whole day? Kind of uncomfortable. I think it's not equal to the men, because nylons should be worn anyway.

But, if you're talking about if it's harder to wear either one in terms of style I think it may be harder for a woman to wear pantyhose seeing as it gets runs and you can't wear them with open-toed shoes without looking odd. But that's not what we're talking about, is it?

I cannot stand to wear neckties. Sure, they may stay in place, but at the expense of being choked by the top shirt button being buttoned, and the tie tightened. On the other hand, I've worn pantyhose as part of halloween costumes, and found them to be quite comfy (and good looking, too!). I'll take pantyhose over being choked by a necktie any day!

I just think that women take it for granted how good they have it. I am a guy so I have been on both sides of the fence. Now before you tell me to back it up, I wear nylons all the time. I wear them under my suit to work. I love wearing nylons. I even have heels that I put on in my office, just to get my feet out of my guy shoes for a while. If I could wear a skirt all day, I would, but pantyhose, panty, and bra, I wear 24/7, and I can tell you I am more glad to take off my tie at the end of my work day, than I am ever to take off my nylons. I love nylons!

I've never wore a necktie, but I can tell you pantyhose are the worst.
They're incredibly itchy and they never sit well. Keeping them clean and run free should be an olympic event.
Stockings can be just as bad if you don't have a good garter keeping them up.
I like bare legs better. I only wear dresses and skirts in the summer so I can avoid runins with the dreaded pantyhose.

I agree with everyone that thinks pantyhose are the worst! I refuse to wear them if at all possible! You spend money on them and can only wear them once before they snag all up and run. Ridiculous! In the summer they are itchy and hot. In the winter, they make my already bad circulation worse. My feet are numb until I take them off and put them in hot water.
My husband only complains about his ties after wearing them for a super long time. But them again, he doesn't have to adjust it every time he goes to the bathroom or throughout the day!

Pantyhose are terrible to put on and once they're on they itch. As for neckties as long as they're not too tight they can be very manageable.
Hope this helped:)

Pantyhose suck. We have to squeeze in and out of them everytime we use the ladies room. They run, need to be replaced often. They slide down our legs, and need "hiking" up.

Neckties.....you put them on, tie the tie, and that is that. No pulling, tugging, hicking them up. No up and down in the washroom.

Not the same thing. Not at all.

Pantyhose's suck. They fall down, you got to yank on um just to pull um up, they run and look ugly. Ties are easy. Once you know how to tie them your golden!
