Toby Forward was sick of rejection notices and sent his book of inner-city stories in under the name Ruhila Khan - a young Pakistani woman. Virago accepted it first time. When they discovered the truth, they angrily pulped their stock so it is very rare today. But I hear there is no lack of quality in the stories.

Of course not, don't be ridiculous. If a book is good it will get published, full stop. Don't give up, keep submitting it. If the publisher thought that a female name might be better he/she would suggest it. Joanne Rowling was told that it would be better to put J.K. Rowling on her first book so as not to put off the potential boy readers.

I don't really know about actual publishing, but as far as selling a book, I think it would be easier to keep a man's name. With a male name, I think more guys would be prone to buy it whereas girls would typically buy either. Guys don't seem to like books by women or are judging them before they read it. For sales, I'd keep it a man's name. Or you could use initials...like JK Rowling. I think her publisher wanted her to do that so that boys would read the Harry Potter books because they couldn't tell it was by a woman.

To be fair i would have to say yes........sorry!!!
I personally think depending on the genre of book, female authors are generally bigger in the game. However if you have a talent or passion for writing it should not make a difference!!!
If you write something submit it as a male and as afemale and test it yourself...........it is the only way to be sure!!!

The fact is, that you should have something worth reading to get published. Whether you're male or female doesn't enter into it.

No. Good work is good work. But if you want to be gender-neutral, use initials or a name like Chris or Pat.
