I've heard that they should not be hung and that they should always be hung.

They should NEVER be hung. It will stretch the fabric.

Cashmere sweaters should be stored clean and folded, lying flat or folded over a hanger. Hanging them the way you would a woven shirt stretches them on odd places. If you're storing them for a long time (as in over the summer) have them cleaned and blocked by a professional and wrapped in plastic.

Do not use hangers to hang sweaters
Fold your sweaters hangers tend to stretch sweaters out of shape.

Storage
Preferably use a sweater bag. An air vacuum bag is not an ideal way to store sweaters, because it presses too tightly.

You can buy plastic containers for your closet- they look nice- or they have these sweater sleeves that come 3 to a package. Don't leave them in a drawer, unless you want to pay a seamstress for sewing up a couple of holes. If you are puting them away for the winter, you might want to get them dry cleaned before storing them.

i fold all my sweaters and store on shelves in my closet to prevent them from losing their shape. Hangers will normally distort the shape of the shoulder and neck line of your sweater.
