Yes THEY are ABSOLUTELY good for the soil and root mass. In small dosages! Have a smoke once a day by your 1-one- plant smoking casually and dip the ashes onto the outer rim of the soil. There is potash, Potassium , nitrogen, & many other micro beneficial Nutrients, the ASHES all so help with desalination/chlorine removal & dissipation , [but you should boil your water or use filtered WATER any way!!!!!] If you have several plants/ small house trees, NOT BONZAI--it WILL KILL IT--anyway ~Make your rounds and dip some ashes in each one- ONLY on the OUTER rim of the soill; -1 cig worth of ashes per plant -per day- you should see mine! Make sure you do this RIGHT before you are about to water them so that the chemicals in small amounts leach into the soil, DO this for 2 days and see amazing results! THe best is a mix of garden mulch, with your orange peels , cantaloupe hides. watermelon husks and rotting tomatoes, mixed into YOUR special little SMALL & EASY compost heap, mixing in rotting leaves [for the bacteria-beneficial!! 4 real!] and grass clippings. This next part sounds nasty but, you take a 5 Gallon pail and fill your COMPOST [at least 3 months in the sun] and if you CAN get rabbit poop. 'au' Naturelle, only 2 cups, half filled w YOUR compost and sit in the rain until it is almost full, STIR vigorously! COVER AND USE this on all plants about 1/2 to 1 cup depending on Plant size and or variety--i also USE "POTTERS" 10-50-10 ['THE "P.M.P" CONTENT = Potassium, Nitrogen, potash. it comes in a little 12ounce-TUB..Yet you can obtain much more but you wont need more than a few pounds for a large planted yard 1 acre or less and the 5 gallons white bucket & the 3 Lbs of compost. Use a 1/4/ to h half cup per gallon of pure water 4/6 times a week. You will not believe this!

Ash is Acidic (sweet). By putting it on your plants/garden you will be hurting it unless what you are growing likes the soil acidic (like blueberries). If you do not know what PH the soil is already I would question why you would want to make it more acidic.

i've never heard cigarette ashes...however WOODash is very high in nitrogen and can help those plants who need tons of it (like corn or sunflowers), or if you're soil is too basic it will raise the pH

you should always wash your hands after smoking if you plan to handle your plants, go in your garden, or plant seeds. it can damage them (i.e. fungus and stuff) or prevent seeds from germinating (it kills them)

Actually tobacco is not good for plants and can cause something called fussarium wilt. (spelling)? If you smoke, you should not do so around your garden or you should wash your hands before handling plants.
