We stayed at the Victorian Inn in Sonoma and liked it.

Get accommodation in Napa, Sonoma, Calistoga or in between and once you are there you can find tons of maps that take you through the fun things to do in the area. There are a few major roads where all the wineries are located. Some travel book and site suggestions below:

Just 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 60 miles north of San Diego lies Southern California's beautiful wine country - Temecula Valley.

Rolling Hills covered with vineyards, expansive views that reach to the highest mountains in four Southern California counties, air swept clean by ocean breezes coming through a gap in the coastal mountains, shopping, antiquing, fine dining, golf, hot air balloon rides and Old Town combine to make Temecula Valley an exciting place to visit for a day or a weekend.

Eighteen wineries produce award-winning premium wines made possible by a unique microclimate and well-drained decomposed granite soils. Our 1100-foot elevation makes for cool summer nights, and cooling breezes come through the vineyards every afternoon throughout the summer.
