Is it possible for a website to have a virus? I built a website for my boss (for his petroleum engineering company) and I got an e-mail from him this morning saying a guy at his work told him that our website has a trojan virus. What does this mean and what can I do to fix it? Thank you!

It is possible for a website to have a virus.
Although, the server hosting the files should have anti-virus software to scan it automatically.

There are a couple things to look at.
1) The person stating the website has a virus doesn't understand what a virus is. (Perhaps an error occurred and he thought it was a virus) Ask this person for the steps to reproduce what he thought was an indication that the site had a virus.

This will help you determine what the problem really is.

2) If the site does have a virus - there are a couple concerns.
a) the computer hosting the files has a virus - the host should scan and prevent this. You'll need to speak to your host.
b) if you created these files it may be that your system has a virus on it.

If a virus is truly there, then make sure you scan your system for that virus.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to email me ans ask.

well.. in my opinion.. it can not get a virus..
why because websites are just html pages.. no more..

and as i think.. there no risk on the html pages..

the question is.. your website is only html pages?
if not.. okay.. check all files with any extension except "php,asp,html,htm"..

if u found any file with *.com, DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY.

mmmmmmmm
if u did not find anything and everything is all right.. "After Scanning using McAfee or norton whatEveR", check the *.js files..
sometimes mistakes in coding.. may make problems in clients side.. u may feel something wrong in the site.. and the problem was in *.js only.. ya3ni DOING SOMETHING SHOULD NOT TO DO.

also.. Are u built the site as PHP or ASP or static pages "html"?

is the site have database and connects to or not ?

finally, ask your boss.. what that guy saw to say "the website has a virus"... the reasons..

it could be fake reasons..
if it were real, okay get the details and tell us what EXACTLY Happened..

as i see it it must have been some mischevious script code(did u use scripts??) if yes, then better remove code that tries to access any resource on clients comp... or have hyperlinked to any other site that may have viruses...some sites link to ftp links that transfer viruses!

best of luck.u got a tough job of Debugging(i knw it can be really killin sometimes!)

Run your McAfee or what ever U have. Run a manual scan. If U got a good 1 it will clean it or quarantine it. Good luck.
