I would rather lose hearing than sight. I'm a writer and, if people can't talk to me, I'll just get more writing done. Fewer interruptions.

Oh, man, these would both suck royally for the three things I love to do most: dance, read, and write.

Though blindness would make it more difficult to get around and impossible to read, I could still type on a keyboard and could definitely still dance. (I mean, it would take practice. But just think how much more you'd enjoy dancing not worrying about what you and everybody else looks like.) Deafness seems the easy way to go, especially for one who's already learned his/her language and how to write, but the thing about deafness that would push me over the edge and make me shoot myself in the face would be never hearing music again. Without music, I wouldn't be inspired to dance at all.

Also, deafness could never give a person the opportunity to develop the human's supposedly most-developed sense: touch. Wonderful, delicious, sensual things in the imagination come about in the absence of sight. On the other hand, how could a deaf person imagine music? How could she hum to herself? An awful thought. Not worth it.

I choose blindness.

Deaf

I used to believe hearing would be the lesser of the senses to lose. But years ago I heard a comparison of the two loses and deafness, more than sight, isolates you from society.

We are social animals and the loss of easy communication with our fellows apparently can be harder to deal with. Perhaps this is why there is university in the U.S. specifically for the deaf, but no such university exists for the blind. They have their own culture and language because they are so cut off.

So, I'll keep my communication and learn to work with the lights off.

Peace

If I had to lose one sense, it would probably be smell. But if I had to choose between deaf or blind, I'd rather be deaf. At least you could cope by using sign language.

Personally, I would choose to be deaf. I would give anything to be able to see my daughters beautiful smile, to watch her grow, watch her get married and have a family. I can always hold the sound of her laughter and her voice in my heart, that doesnt change as often as looks do.

If I had to choose a sense to lose, it would be hearing. I could cope by sign language. I could learn to read lips. There's too much noise anyways. I'd probably get a sounder, deeper sleep more often. But my sight, I'd absolutely hate to lose! To never see the sun, or flowers, or my child's face, my husband's smile. It would be a lot to lose. I don't know. I don't wish it upon anyone to lose any sense or anything. Let's not go there! Just don't worry, be happy and hope that'll never happen! Eeeeek! What a thought! You're brave!

That is a very difficult choice to make, but not to hear laughter, voices is horrible but not to see humans, trees, the sky ect...is worse for me personally. So I had no choice but to say Yes to being deaf for the rest of my life but I would be able to see where I am going.

I would prefer to be deaf.

There is an entire culture -- perhaps even religion -- of the deaf.
