Well, the longer your intestine, the more you can absorb to a limit. Some people who had to have some of their small intestine removed have a harder time absorbing all of their nutrients and often lose weight. They need to eat meals that would be easier to digest.

Herbivores tend to have relatively longer intestines than carnivores.
This is because plant (cellwall/cellulose) materials are harder to digest than animal protein.
