My toilet tank (not bowl, THANK GOD !!) is leaking water - contstant drip drip. Last night I put a bucket underneath, and with in 9 hours, not only the bucket was overflowing, but my bathroom literally had a flood.
Since I am at work right now, I first emptied the tank and turned off the tap so tank does not fill up again. What can I used to seal up the crack?? Eventually we need to replace it.

I tried to solve that same problem. The best I could do after a lot of trial and error was get it down to a slow leak by emptying and drying it and then coating the crack with waterproof epoxy.

You need to make getting a new tank a priority. The constant dripping will destroy your bathroom floor and the ceiling below. You can probably get a salvaged tank from a junk yard or a new (but ugly) plastic universal tank from a plumbing supply place.

By the time you get around to "eventually" your house will be a wreck and the repairs will be very expensive.

I have temporarily fixed a crack in the tank with silicon, but you have to do a couple of things first to have a chance it will work. First, keep your water turned off to the toilet. Flush the toilet to empty the tank. If the crack is on the very bottom, you'll need to use rags to remove all the water. Then you need to get the porcelain dry, quicker to use a hair dryer for this, otherwise wait a couple of days for it to dry. Spread the silicon over the crack, be sure to spread out wider and longer then the crack. Let the silicon dry overnight, then you can try your tank again. Doesn't always work, but this will give you the best chance of success.

a complete new toilet is less expensive than ripping up the floor and repairing water damage. not to mention the possibility of mold, carpenter ants, etc. if you can't buy a new tank for your toilet, just buy a new one! the brand should be marked on the toilet behind where the seat attaches. also write down any numbers from the inside of the tank. then call the local plumbing supply house, not a home depot or lowes, that sells that brand. chances are they might have a replacement in stock. bring the lid with you when you go to pick it up to make sure you have the right one. also follow their advice as far as any other parts you will need to do the job correctly. good luck.

Before you try to fix it, you need to know what the problem is. If the tank is cracked, you may look for some kind of epoxy to fix it, but generally speaking, the problem is the fill tube. These parts come in complete kits for about $20. You'll probably spend more time on it than you anticipate, so make sure you have enough time to finish the project all at once.

Get new rubber washers. merely tighten the bolts over the rubber washer with the tension of two arms. in case you over tighten rubber washers they're going to pinch up and leak. additionally, tighten one bolt slightly, then the different, and substitute like that. in case you tighten one all the way down the seals should not be even. make useful the nut is on best, then the metallic washer, then the rubber washer is under the metallic washer. If all else fails, get a rubber washer for the two facets.
