Which side? The simplified answer is that Germany and the Soviet Union wanted to rule Europe. Italy I think just wanted to life and didn't really care about it. The Empire of Japan wanted to take over the Pacific.
The allied powers were trying to prevent Germany from taking over the World and then turned their attention on Japan. Although the war against Japan was really more about American then most of the other countries. Now remember that the Soviet Union eventually turned to the Allied side after Germany tried to take over. With as weakened as the rest of the Allies were and with the Soviet's only intrest in being taking out Germany there was little to fight the Empire of Japan other then the U.S.

Well, the Germans wanted to dominate Europe and enslave the populace for 1000 years.

The Italians wanted to look important.

The Russians wanted to stop the Germans from repeating Napoleon's mistakes, and afterward wanted to punish the Germans for making those same mistakes over again.

The Japanese wanted to own Asia, enslave the populace, steal everyone else's resources, and rape all the non-Japanese women.

The Chinese wanted to recapture the Emperors throne and take all the gold (one group of them), and another Chinese group wanted to repel the Japanese and unify the country, and that way control the gold.

The British wanted to avoid being enslaved.

The Americans wanted to prevent the British and French from losing their land, and then they wanted to recapture all the oilfields, and prevent Germany from accomplishing its goals.

America also wanted to prevent the Japanese from enslaving our friends the Chinese gold hunters, and wanted to save the Vietnamese rubber plantations for the French (They kept at that until 1975), AND they wanted to give Japan a serious bloody nose for all that Pearl harbor activity.

Only the British and Americans and Russians accomplished their goals, mostly.

It's confusing, we know, but if you study this war for 20 years or so, people will then pay you to confuse them about it.

Aint life grand?

Why, to win, and supply filmmakers with yet another background theme.

You really should refine the question, and post it in Homework.
