I noticed that when I activated my Wii and the Connect24 option, when I power the unit down, the DVD led (blue light) will start illuminating. Does this mean that it is downloading information, or is just for 'effect'?

you can go to wii settings, -> wiiconnect24 -> slot illumination to turn it off

You shouldn't worry too much about that. It flashes when you received new content from WiiConnect24. If you are unsure, you can go to the Customer Service link at Nintendo's Website.

yes i did this as well and noticed the blue glow, i also noticed that when i went back to it the system was very hot. so now i unplug it from the wall.

a little of both when updates are avialiable it automatcly dls stuff......it is more for effect kind of like a heart beat
