the "H" in the middle of the "C" emblem stands for 'les habitants'. which basically is the french version of 'canadiens'. they wanted to keep the "H" there since montreal has such a huge french heritage.

a canuck is a canadien also...so basically, 2 nhl teams have the same name, jsut a different way of saying them.

most people believe that the H stands for the Habitant, Habs in English. but its not the CH stand for Le Club de Hockey Canadien, C for Canadien and H for Hockey. Habitants is the name used to refer to both the French settlers and the America-born inhabitants of French origin who farmed the land along the two shores of the St. Lawrence waterway in what is the present-day Province of Quebec in Canada. and that's where the name Habitant comes from and Habs for English.

they use to be called le Club Athletique-Canadien, it use to be a CA, C stands for Canadien and the A stands for Athletique. here are their logo's throughout the years.

In 1924, Madison Square Garden owner Tex Rickard was falsely told by someone that the "H" in the logo of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team stood for "habitant", a French word that in those days was used to denote the farmers of Quebec. Rickard was told that the French players on the team came from the farms and that they were therefore "habitants" or "habs".

If you have seen the Canadiens logo, it has an H in the C. The Canadiens are also referred to Les Habitants in French.
