You have to put yourself in the position to help others, which of course means helping yourself first.

I do not believe you should ever place yourself at the back of bus so to speak, but by the same token, placing others needs in front of your own desires is indeed what I would call " Christ Like Behavior" .
You are right when you say we are a self serving society, we are probably the most self serving of all..
Do you think perhaps we have just become afraid to get involved with others due to the fact that we have become such a sue happy society? We step into help another, and then find ourselves the accused..
Given all that, I would like to think I would indeed help another.
Immediate Satisfaction is highly over-rated.. and as fleeting as any feeling one will ever experience.

I have often heard throughout my life that you should love yourself first before you can love someone else. To me, that means find out who you are and take care of yourself. I can say that I am living proof of that because I am still in my early 20's, and I have NO INTEREST in having children or marriage right now (even though I have a boyfriend who I love and care about). I graduated college in May 2005, and am still looking for a job where I can make some decent money. The point is that I am barely able to take care of myself right now, let alone tend to someone else's needs.

I think people are kinda confused when thinking they should serve themselves first or to serve others for the common good.
You may think serving yourself first is being selfish and inconsiderate to others needs and feelings; where in fact i believe this is a necessity to look after yourself in order to nourish and grow and learn; and this will eventually lead to a common good.
As for saying you should put others before you, people also think that means you should be a slave for the system and you should do as told cause it is for the greater good. But that is not necessary true, for when going a good deed the positive affect reflects on you and your sense of accomplishment. So even when your going a good thing for others it is still good for you.

We are a selfish generation. Everything is about ME. It gets more about WE as we get older or when we get married. The popular media aside, I think most Americans take their parental responsibilities seriously.
You should be considerate of your cohabitants, of course, but you should also reward yourself. Living with others means compromise. Only a dick would remain selfish all the time.

Jesus commanded, "Love your neighbour as yourself." Simply put, care for others as much as you care for yourself, because you know that you are as much dependent on others in your daily life as you are dependent on yourself. No man is an island.

Successful life is about balance
Too much self service makes one obnoxious & tedious
Too much service of others can make one bitter . . .
Life should be a mix / balance NOT an either or .
