What things will cause me to use less/more energy in my home throughout the year? any explanation on why they will, will be greatly appreciated

Standard light bulbs, water tank, and heat/air units are the biggest culprits. You can contact your energy provider for a free energy audit and they will come to your home and provide a list of changes you can make to save money. Good Luck!

Biggest electrical use comes from use of the following: Hair Dryer, Iron, Electric Blanket, portable electric heaters.
STAR rated appliances are recommended for less energy use. The STAR tag is on the appliance and means better energy use by that product.
Gas consumption is usually that old furnace and poor insulation. High efficiency furnaces recycle burned gas for extra heating and in turn use less gas. Insulate your attic and also the basement. 33 percent of thermal energy is lost through the basement by not having a vapor barrier. Heating and Cooling happens from the physics of water in the (O2) air . Programable thermostat is recommended. Allows the home not to be heating up and cooling down when it's not needed. A common over look is changing your furnace's filter every other month. Year round if you have A/C it uses the same air supply system.
Air leaks around light switches, outlets, doors and windows. You can check these areas with your hand a feel drafts of air. Most hardware stores carry insulation for all areas of the home by location.
