Three old ladies go to a second hand shop to buy a TV.

They pick one out and it costs £30. They pay the shopkeeper £10 each, and arrange for free delivery.

The next day, the shop owner gives the delivery driver £3, and asks him to give it back to the ladies, because he feels a bit sorry for them.

On his journey, the driver decides that he'll keep £1 for himself, because he's a bit of a liar and a thief.

So on his arrival, the driver drops off the TV and gives the old ladies £2 back.

Okay, so two of the old ladies have paid £9 each, and one has paid £10, yes?

The driver kept £1, yes?

So where has the other £1 gone? The above only adds up to 29, but in the beginning there was 30.

Please help. It hurts my bain.

The correct answer for this is that none of the ladies paid £9, they all paid equal amounts therefore when the driver has £3 to give back it is expected that each will recieve £1 however he keeps £1 so there is £2 to be divided by the 3 ladies, this means that they each get 66.6 recurring pence, meaning they've each paid £9.66-66666666666 (recurring) £9.66-6666 times 3 is £29. (well 9.66 X 3 is 28.98 so two ladies will get an extra penny) plus the £1 the driver took makes £30. Hope this clears it up for you and everyone else.

Do you really think i'm going to get any sleep tonight now ?

Ta, worth a think

£30

-3 = £27 should be paid for TV

3-1 =£2 to give back

£2 back means they pay £28 for telly.

he keeps £1, means total is £29...

confused, let me have a drink, i'll come back

i still don't think the first answer "solves" or explains the riddle

They paid £30, driver gives them back £2. Saving £2 is the same as 2 ladies paying £9 and 1 lady paying £10 = 9+9+10=£28....but he only kept £1 for himself.....his £1 and there £28 make...£29

can i have 10 points for my brain hemmorage ?

And i don't get PaulM answer ( below ) . He says 2 lots of 10 and one of 9...well thats £29 , so that's not right as he gave them £2 back

and alcatraz answer says "they still paid £30". Well, no they didn't. They got £2 back, thats the whole point. They got 2 back, the driver kept 1....28+1=29

I need to log off now, i'm sounding really stupid.

EDIT:

So, at 1:07 AM ( I looked at the clock ) I finally realised the reason for this.

The original question positions £2 as a - and the £1 as a +. The formula is incorrect. The £2 and £1 need to be either both added or subtracted by the logic. Using words allows the question to hide the mistake.

I guess many other people understand this, but no one explained it.

Well you see the following day the same thing happened again.

3 old ladies £10 each for TV.

Shopkeeper said give em back £3.00.

But This time the driver kept £2.00 for himself.

So today 2 old ladies paid £10 each = £20
1 Old Lady paid £9 - - - - £20 + £9 = £29
Driver kept £2.00 - - - - - £20 + £9 + £2 = £31.00

So that is where the other pound went from the day before.

well following your logic

start all the three people give £10 each = £30
£3 is given back so tv was £27
driver nabed £1 so £2 left
re distributed so overalll they paid 30, 3 back and the 1 to the driver
heres the mistake the ladies have paid 2 lots of 10 and one lot of 9
each lady pays £9 for tv so 3*9 then recieve 2 back

10 +10 + 9 + 1 = 30

Three Old Ladies

there isn't one, this is an old mathematic puzzle. They pay £10 each, equals £30. Gets £3 refunded, equals £27 to go back to the ladies, equals £9 each. So there is £3 supposed to go back to them but the driver actually keeps £1 of that and gives them back the other £2. So it does add up to £30.
You're adding where you are supposed to be subtracting. Follow my logic above, it does work out in the end.
Great puzzle though
