The most common convention is to assign 12 a.m. to midnight and 12 p.m. to noon, defining both half days to have a closed (inclusive) beginning and open (exclusive) end. 12 noon and 12 midnight can more clearly and correctly express these times.

A.M. = Ante Meridian (12:00 in the morning-11:59 in the afternoon)
P.M. = Post Meridian ( 12:00 in the afternoon - 11:59 at night)

A.M. and P.M.

A.M. means Ante Meridian, or before the sun passes over your closest Meridian or nearest Longitudinal demarcation.

P.M means Post Meridian, or after the sun passes over your closest Meridian.

Although most Meridians or Longitudinal lines are straight, many have been "altered" to fit within geographical or political boundaries, in an effort to keep the timezone of one area uncomplicated.

In the Continental US we have 4 time zones, separated by 3 meridians or Longitudinal lines.

Yes, they're abreviations for Latin on the 12-hr clock & started somewhere in the mid-1600s
am = ante meridiem -- before midday
pm = post meridiem -- after midday

In terms of time,it means anti meridian n post meridian.which's the position of sun.it simply means before n after 12.
but if u r talking about some creams etc. where's its written it means u 've to apply it morning n evening...i.e twice dialy.i hope this solves ur query
