Because British literature has had an enormous impact on literature all over the world. Because Shakespeare was English. Because the novel is an English invention. Because Beatles were English. And because David Bowie is English.
We live in an Anglo-Saxon culture, and you have to know the minds and thoughts of great men and women.
Besides: English literature is simply fun. Use it to exercise your mind and to get a better language, verbally and written.

Because some of it is the most brilliant literature written in the English language... seems kind of self evident.
I don't enjoy much of American literature - but I've read quite a bit of it... it gives a sense of history and culture.
If we forget where we came from as English speakers, we forget much of our pasts...
Personally I hated it... but as I've gotten older, I recognize why I was forced to read it...
Try a bit of really old history - read Thucydides's 'The Peloponnesian War'... translated into English its rather fascinating... particularly as he apparently died in mid sentence writing it...
Reading is a good habit to develop... and it gets nookie.

It will make you a more well-rounded individual and place you on equal footing with others who have studied it. Besides, you would miss out on some marvelous (Dickens, Shakespeare) works if you didn't.
