It is really more of a decision about the use of ultrasound. Dopplers use ultrasound to listen the the baby's heart (what you are really hearing is an echo of the beating of the heart as the sound waves bounce off of it). Dopplers are actually a stronger form of ultrasound than imaging ultrasound. You might want to consider the risks and benefits of ultrasound technology. There still have been no studies that prove ultrasound 100% safe during pregnancy. Take a look at this article:

I understand how exciting it is to hear the baby's heart, though. If you are near your 3rd trimester, you can also listen to your baby's heart with a fetoscope (audible after about 22 weeks of pregnancy, the fetoscope is like a fancy stethescope for listen to baby's in utero).

I bought mine on amazon.com. A bebe BT-200. It was $115, but i could hear the baby's heartbeat at 12 weeks! Plus, you can always resell it on ebay after the baby is born. I love having it. It's reassuring to be able to listen to the heartbeat whenever I feel like something might be wrong. At first I listened like every other day, but now it's like once a week or so. Good luck with your pregnancy!

I rented one during my pregnancy - it was around $15/per month I think? I got it from www.babybeats.com around the end of the first trimester and was able to listen to his little heartbeat everyday - which was completely reassuring having had previous miscarriages. I only kept it for about 2 months until I could feel him kick everyday, so the cost was completely reasonable compared to purchasing one. There's several websites that offer the rental service - just do a google search.

Hearing your baby's heartbeat whenever you want will definitely make it worth it. The thought crossed my mind to rent or purchase one because I would get paranoid between doctor visits wondering if my baby was OK since it was to early to feel movement and tell for myself. If you can afford it go for it. GOOD LUCK!

i bought one at target for $20 just to listen to my baby's heartbeat but i keep forget i have the thing and i dont ever use it. so don't spend $150 on something that you probably won't use often. as long as you feel your baby move then you're good. that's what i go by.

I agree-dont do it.
a lot of them you cant hear anything until you are at the end of your last trimester. (even though the directions say otherwise)
& a lot of the noise you hear is your own body-not baby
also-you have to have everything positioned just right or the heartbeat that you catch is your own.
