Like others have said, If it still has a root ball it can be replanted.
There are a few factors though. If you live in an area that the ground freezes, you can't plant it outside now. The roots of the tree need about 6 weeks in the ground before the 1st freeze. This time is for the tree roots to become semi-established.
If it is at all possible, pick up a pot or a plant liner @ a garden center, put the tree in it, put the potted tree in your garage and water it occasionally. Plant it outside in the Spring.

A potted tree can be planted in the ground by digging a hole twice the diameter as the root ball and dig a little deeper. Fill in the hole till the depth is slightly shallower than the root mass. The loose dirt will allow the roots to get a better start. loosen up the covering and put in ground. Fill in dirt to original depth of tree. Don't plant it deeper, this will kill it. Pack the soil tightly around the tree and stake it so the wind will not move the tree. Water like you were drowning it for several days. You may want to put straw or mulch around it for added protection against the cold. Good luck.

If the roots are intact - then plant as directed by your local garden expert at a landscape or home store (like Lowe's or Home Depot). Conditions for planting vary from region to region and you may need soil conditioners to plant the tree properly. Call a garden expert for the best advice. Good Luck!

It also depends on what kind of tree it is. Stores often sell small, predecorated trees which are Norfolk pines. These are house plants. I have some huge ones that I got about 15 years ago.

Unless you uprooted it, roots and all, you cannot replant it.
