to just elicit a bunch of answers, most of which you don't really care about because you already know the answer to your question yourself?

If anything I try to stay away from questions like that because I do care about the answers I get. Even if I cant avoid asking a question that might get a reaction like that I try to word it a certain way or use a metaphor so it doesnt look like what it is.

Hmm I too figured that was the point of yahoo answers. I dont ask many questions anymore, however I do find that I enjoy answering the dumb ones. They are amusing.

Judging by who most askers pick for "best answer," I'd say 99% of the questions are to either designed to inflame or to provide reassurance of the asker's views.

And to be fair, I ask questions intended to educate people of their ignorance.
