A really funny one is called "Catch-22" It's especially humerous to anyone who ever flew in the military. A more serious one would be "Johnnie Got His Gun", which details the events of a horrible war experience. In fact it was banned during the Vietnam war because of the negative (but accurate) image that it painted of war events.

My first two recommendations are World War II books and come from a non-American point of view.
1) Enemy at the Gates by William Graig is probably the best WWII book I have ever read. It is about the Battle of Stalingrad between Germany and the USSR.
2) Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer is an autobiography of a Germany soldier who fought on the eastern front. Before the war the author considered himself French and hardly spoke German. I believe the book is required reading at both the US and British military academies.
The third book is Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden, it is more recent and concerns the US military involvement in Somalia in the 1990s.

I liked We Were Soldiers Once...and Young by Harold G. Moore and Joseph Galloway. It's about an assault during the Vietnam war. It was pretty detailed in parts and you learn a lot about military terms.
