How long does it take? Ask any keen musician and you will hear 'forever'.....with a smile.
If you have space and can make a lot of noise then go for something that has a big presence.
Saxophone is fun. Clarinet or even flute.
Classical guitar is a lot more difficult than it appears.
Piano if you have the space.
The secret is to enjoy and not worry about what people think of your playing.....except your teacher.
BTW Bagpipes are good because no one really knows if you are playing well or not.

Guitar or piano.
Guitar is great because it's portable. But piano is also nice. Both are great instruments for composing.
If you want to be an in-demand musician, though, learn how to play bass. Bands are always looking for bass players.
Learning will take some time, so you have to be prepared to put in the time and effort. But if you have the desire and drive, at your age you should pick up the basics fairly quickly.
Be sure to learn chords as well as how to read music.
Best of luck to you. Have fun! You're giving yourself a gift that will last a lifetime.

For me, it is the erhu, or what is sometimes called a Chinese violin, the bagpipes, the cello, and, such a lot importantly of all: the electrical guitar. The erhu and bagpipes are tied at 3rd on my record. The cello is moment, and the electrical guitar comes first. I was once devastated in top college whilst the recognition that I had picked the improper tool ultimately hit. The flute wasn't proper for me; I most effective selected it considering that it was once the identical tool my sister performed. And then, of path, I heard this music and learned how a lot time I'd wasted chasing the improper factor. When I pay attention a fine electrical guitar solo it is like love, and that is the--in a gigantic, booming voice--DEEP, DARK SECRET. It's invigorating and lovely and I love that sound with a ardour. It bought me via a extreme bout of despair (a couple of honestly). Music was once the one factor I had whilst nobody knew easy methods to pay attention. It's insane, however I consider extra for that tool's sound than I do for such a lot folks. Go determine.

I would say the best instrument to learn is the guitar. It is the easiest instrument to pick up and gives you a good foundation if you want to learn other instruments. As for length, that depends on how motivated and how much you are willing to practice.

What do you want to play? Guitar, piano, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, flute, harp, dulcimer, bass, drums, violin etc. There are so many amazing instruments out there- just decide which one and go for it. Or pick two or three. They are all going top take time and practice and that's up to you to determine just how bad you want to learn and how good at playing you want to be.
