To terrorize me as a child...and as an adult....I am truly not sure. I know some, like mud daubers (I lived in the deep south in sub tropic area) simply build mud nests. I think the real question is why are Bumble Bees callded Bumblers when they are the meanest, even meaner than the wasp, I kid you not, I have run screaming into the house to hide away from the B...........umbers, many times as a child. They chew through wood and live in it. They are territorial like wasps. Their sting isn't like a jelly fish, which is what a wasp's is like to me, but more like being hit with a hammer. They don't die, either, like poor honey bees when they sting you. I have a gripe against wasps and bumble bees. terrible creatures. they've taken the place of fairy tale scary stuff. that and yellow jacket nests in the ground. Ive seen people swollen to bits and still screaming from an attack. and hornets? I GUESS it could be that they are pollen and seed carriers therefore part of the environment, but i still hate them. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion on this matter. Ta!

Wasps are a very important part of the food chain. They feed on flies eggs and lava that affect meat so butchers like them in the shop. they also eat other pests. They die when they sting so they don't sting unless the the threatened. If you are having a picnic and one comes attracted by the jam etc. If you ignore it and cover over the food it will go away but if leap up and start trying to swat it it is likely to sting you. they are also part of the food chain for birds

wasps do a great service by killing and eating smaller insects that eat our crops. owls are great too. the only animal that has no real purpose in the world apart from head lice is man except for war, death and destruction! so cut the beautiful wasp some slack!

here's no such thing as a bad wasp; just good wasps who have had hard lives. We take it upon ourselves to re-educate offending wasps into becoming good and profitable members of society. Why, just last year we have successfully gotten over twenty wasps into higher education, and at least one from that program is now a high-flying city solicitor.

LOL, are you saying that Australians shouldn't exist?
There is a purpose for every creature on the face of the earth. Possiby the wasp's purpose is population control to certian species of insects.

1) Things don't exist for a reason.
2) Being fluffy is not a survival trait. Stinging and killing things to eat them is.
3) There is no god.
4) The dodo wasn't wiped out by nature, the last one was beaten to death for fun by Dutch sailors.

I could turn that around and ask you "what is the purpose of humans"? We're very destructive to all the rest of the planet.
Just because we can't "see" a purpose in an organism, doesn't mean that there isn't one. Things live because they "can".
PS....You've just opened up a good argument AGAINST creationism.
