Gun is the umbrella term for any "firearm," including bb and pellet guns, cannons, or anything that shoots a projectile. A pistol is basically a handgun, or anything that's held in one hand. This includes derringers, the old "pepperbox," revolvers, automatics, and everything else. When you talk about a revolver, you're getting more specific. Think of the cowboys, with their Colt 45. It's got a revolving chamber that holds the bullets, hence the name. Then there's the automatic -which is a bit of a misnomer, since they're actually "semi-automatic." On this one, you can't see the bullets, because they are inside a "clip" which usually fits up inside the gun's handle. They most often don't have an exposed hammer, either, though some do. Then there's rifles, which, like "pistol" covers just about any gun that's held in two hands. Shotguns are technically in the rifle category, though most people distinguish between them. Again, a rifle could be a bb or pellet rifle, or it could be a big, heavy military assault rifle, with full-automatic capability. So with all guns, it helps a lot to be specific. But of course, none of these weapons would be used iin Ceasar's time! They didn't even have flintlocks or matchlocks yet. Primitive cannons, maybe, but nothing a person could carry, let alone handguns! That doesn't mean you can't make a modern version of the story. Maybe use Dirty Harry's 357 Magnum for that! Look around and there's places to get counterfeit non-firing guns of all types, for stage use. If it's not for a play, but just written, then you can use whatever your imagination can come up with... Give them a futuristic phaser, maybe?

guns don't exist, there's a cute little poem for them, though. this is my weapon, this is my gun, this one's for killing, this one's for fun. We were taught that our "weapon" was generally a rifle (e.g., M-16, etc.) A pistol is a hand held weapon. A revolver is a pistol with a revolving ammunition chamber. An automatic pistol is a pistol which loads automatically and fires until empty; other pistols need to be ****** before each shot. A pistol can be a revolver, an automatic, a single shot, flintlock, etc. Often, pistols and other weapons are referred to by their bullet size or brand; e.g., a .45, a .22, 9 millimeter, Beretta, Smith & Wesson, Colt, etc.

A revolver is a gun that has a revolving cylinder that holds the rounds.
A pistol is a firearm that can be used with one hand.

Stick to your history. Knives are still a method of assasination in ALL cultures. Doing death is not worth the effort unless you get the target's blood on you...
