I'm sure the idea of a space traveler goes back as far as the first man to look at the stars, but as for the modern hype and hysteria,
it would be Orson well when he did the original war of the worlds hoax, the mass confusion he caused spurred the modern day UFO craze

Definition of Alien: differing in nature or character typically to the point of incompatibility.

So if oyu live in Eurasia, someone who lives in Meixco, would be an "alien". I bet you are talking about Alien visitors from space. Those are still considered aliens to us, as they differ in character, and we are aliens to them. So they have always existed. We found bacteria on Mars. Those are aliens, so they do exist and always have. Our imagination probably twists their image, but they DO exist and always have.

They have always been around. In the old days they were called demons or succubus, but with the decline of religious influence anything out of the ordinary has been attributed to "aliens".
