The moon doesn't have a purpose but serves a very definte purpose. It isn't like someone put the moon there for a purpose.
Theory #1-The moon is either a body of rocky(and possibly liquid inside) material which the earth captured in it;s earlky beganings. As astroids and rocks, metors colided they began to form what we know as our moon. After being constantley bombarded for billions of years by dust, metors, and astroids our moon grew to it's present size.
Theory #2-The moon was formed when a huge object(possible another planet or moon) object collided with our earth knocking a peice of it off which began to circle around the earth as it was attracted by gravitational force beforce it could completely escape.
Theory #3-The area between Mars, and jupiter is called the astroid belt due to the billions of astroids, metors, rocks and othe rspace debris in orbit there. It is beelived that this resulted form two planets (such as mars and another) collided there creating the belt and our moon was a direct result of that collision but some times in the past escaped the astroid belt and wondered into the earths gravitational field which captured it.
Som escientist beleive this astroid belt was created as mar scollided with another large body and this could well account for mars loss of it's asthosphere, and many streams or lakes which we now are sure once flowed there.
The moon Is what gives us our tides and helps to keep our inner hot molten core active which in turn keeps the earth a moving ever changing repairing body. Once the moon is gone(our moon moves away from us at a rate of 6 inches a year) the earth will become uninhabitable. Lif ewill eventually crease to exist here.

The moon isn't there to furfill a purpose. But, somethings that it does that are useful is that itsn't gravitational pull causes the whole low and high tide phenomenon. It also influences a couple other aspects of the earth's climate. So if you are looking for a scientific reason of why the particular diety of your religion put the moon there. Just tell yourself it was to make the earth more like it is today.

i read somewhere that it'd be disastrous if you were to like suddenly "take" the moon away from where it is orbiting.
the gravity shift would cause the earth's orbit to become unstable, and there'll be huge tidal waves n floods, and climatic changes etc. the moon regulates the tides.
so all in all, i would say it serves an important purpose just by being there.

Well, anthropomorphic or not, there is a better than fair chance that were it not for the moon and its relative size to earth, life may never have made it on to land. The lunar tidepools served as dry runs (no pun intended) for sea life to emerge and transition to land.

The moon doesn't have a "purpose".
The moon is nothing but a lifeless piece of rock that is stuck in the Earth's orbit which occasionally reflects sunlight onto the Earth.
