Because a court would likely find that it was cruel and unusual otherwise (although whether lethal injection is cruel and unusual itself is being debated). The method of termination is just as important as the fact of death oftentimes, and subjecting the condemned to inhumane treatment is unacceptable. Without sterilization, one would not know if the body would have been infected with a communicable disease (which could affect how the body is disposed of), might cause additional unnecessary pain, could cause drug interactions with the "cocktail," and it just nasty.

I've often wondered that myself. The best answer anyone has been able to give me is that its medical procedure and against the law to not have a sterilized needle and to not sterilize the area. But in my honest opinion I think a bullet is a much cheaper way.

Because there is always a chance that whoever is sticking the needle in the crim, might accidentally get stuck by the needle and get blood poisoning or something worse.

Just like asking to turn the criminal over to the families, they think its wrong. I dont. I wouldn't care if they used a rusty nail. Only people who see a financial gain will complain, until something happens to someone in their family. How did our country get so anal?

to give the inmate as sterile and humane death as possible.
Which seems contradictory as the inmate is being killed.
