I as well as many of my friends just took the exam about two months ago. What we all took out of it was that memorizing words was absolutely useless. One of my more studious friends memorized about 1000 words from a GRE word list (no exaggeration) over the last summer, and maybe 4 or 5 of them were on the test. I would say work on the math, it might be your best bet at getting a decent if not impressive score, after all, its high school math, just with ridiculous wording. Take plenty of practice exams on the computer since its computer based, it'll help with your timing. You can find some free ones online, but you might be better off just buying a book with a cd-rom. These usually come with at least 3 exams. Don't completely disregard studying for verbal though, the book should have some helpful tips in preparing for it, just don't kill yourself memorizing words, its just too much stress. Most of all, get a good nights sleep, get there early, bring your ID and RELAX.

Of course this is not an easy question. I currently have a scholarship and will never be able to go to a graduate school in the US till I pass this nightmare called GRE. Anyway, I can give you something from my experience:
1-First of all, go to the GRE website so as to know more about it. The link is: www.gre.org
2-Try to purchase a preparation series such as the series I rely on now. It is called Baron's How to prepare for the GRE Test. What's particular about this book is that it contains a lot of useful tactics that help you so much, especially in the Math Section of the exam.
3-Download free preparation material from the Internet. Just open the google or yahoo and write in the search bar the follwoing: GRE FREE PREPARATION MATERIAL and see what you will get.
4-You should spend much time learning and revising GRE commonly used vocabulary because the words used in the verbal section are not commonly used in everday life.
Good luck for you and for me in the GRE

Read books and Journals and use a thesaurus or dictionary to help with words you cannot figure out. The only way you will retian the new vocabulary is if you see it in context. Try using the words with a friend who knows you are trying to develop your vocab (so they don't think you are weird). Lastly, try to relate the meanings and words to things you already know, you need several exposures to new materiial before it becomes long term knowledge. Goodluck, you will do fine.

I recommend you take the Princeton Review or Kaplan review course. They are expensive but worth every penny.
