USB modem need a driver to work. Most modem will have 2 types of connection : usb and ethernet. If yours does not have an ethernet port, you should be thinking about getting another modem. Use ethernet for internet connection instead of usb.

To answer your question, there is a minor throughput difference, but most would never notice it.

Regarding the rest of your statements, if I understand, you have ethernet port on your laptop, and you have a USB wifi adapter. Neither of these are 'modems' so you have to state the question better.

If I am right in my assumptions, you will get better throughput being directly connected to your ethernet router. But if all you are going to do is surf and email, wifi through a USB adapter should be just fine...as long as you have good signal strength.

you can going from a pc but you would need drivers on the usb end, which the usb modem won't have.

the thing is, by the time you spent money on adapters etc u might as well have just got a ethernet modem.. or taken the router back and got an all in one modem router

If your modem doesn't have an Ethernet port you'll need to change it out for one that does.

Had the same problem, all i did to solve it was to connect the router to the PC with the ethernet cable and it worked fine.
