My son will be 5 months on the 11th and I have been trying to introduce solids for about the last 3 wks but I am having a hard time finding something that he likes. He is not very big on baby food or cereal at all, just spits it at me but putting regular food in the blender isn't working either. I have noticed that if mommy is eating something then he wants to try it. any helpful suggestions on what to do next? he is a healthy boy, weighs almost 19lbs so he isn't sleeping thru the night because formula just doesn't hold him over night

Signs of readiness for solids include: being able to sit up with support, and the ability to feed from a spoon.

The protrusion reflex is seen in babies who are not physically ready to eat solids. It sounds like your son, when he is "spitting it back out", or when you put the spoon up to his mouth and sticks his tongue out, this is the protrusion reflex. It usually goes away when babies are closer to 6 months.

The new AAP guidelines are to wait until your baby is 6 months before introducing solids. Early introduction of solids has been linked with an increased risk of food allergies.

5 hours of uninterrupted rest is considered a full night of sleep for infants, not 8. Night waking is completely normal at his age. He will eventually sleep better as he gets older. He may need to wake up to eat at least once or twice during the night at his age to eat.

You can try to start a routine with him and put him down close to the same time every night. This will help him eventually associate the routine with sleep. You can also try to feed him more often during the day, so he does not make up for it as much at night. If he goes longer than 3-4 hours, wake him and feed him during the day. Sometimes, this will help babies stretch a little more at night.

Good Luck to you and your little one.

Well if you are eating healthy I dont see why it would be bad for him to taste. The problem with Adult food vs Baby food is that baby food is pure, without chemicals, presertivites, and added sugar, which is not good for baby.
My daughter did not like the vegetable baby food.. but I did mix the cereal with some of the fruit.. ( peaches, bananas, etc,,)
Try diffrent types.
Make mashed potatoes with real potatoes..minus the butter and milk.
make a mock baby plate when you sit to eat.. but make his no meat, and dont add salt to the veggies... make shure they are small and mashed up so he doesnt choke. And as long as he is getting in his formula/breastmilk.. then he should be ok..
Also WIC give tips to mothers also for nutrition for kids.

and what I did in regards to waking up beacuse of hunger... I had a special bottle with a hole a little bigger in it. I added some baby cereal to his forumla and warmed it up. Since there was cereal in with the milk it kept him full longer and he didnt wake until morning ... fill the bottle with 6-7 oz of formula.. then add the cereal... I like using the rice.. shake... add more to get desired thickness... remember to make the nipple hole bigger so the cereal can pass thru.
see if that helps!!

I'd discuss it with your pediatrician....I'd say he's probably not ready for solids yet...when my kids were small...(some years ago)...Dr.'s always told me they didn't need anything but formula for the first 12 months...try giving him water in his bottle about every 2-3 time he wakes up in the night...eventually he'll decide that waking up for water isn't worth waking up for...and he'll sleep....if he doesn't like the water...try putting a couple drops of Karo (white) syrup in the water...this will also help if he's constipated. Good Luck!

Try some baby cereal with half a small jar of bananna baby food in it. This really works. As for the other food you need to keep woring with him to find out what he likes and what he does'nt like.

It's probably not the tast of the food that is bothering him but just the act of eating. Just keep trying whenever you sit down to eat and he will catch on eventually.
