1) you will love it
2) yes, use the local tabernas
3) most you come across can speak english to help you out
4) I use Athens (relative of relatives home) as my base
there I can go by ferry to Poros and then take day trips to small islands and walk around
5) Naflio is a nice smaller town to go to, good place to eat there also
6) traffice in Athens is WILD.....lol
7) watch out for ordering margaritas..they will knock you on your ***....no kidding....thats from experience
8) the food is wonderful
9) xmm in fact never found anything I didn't like about there and going back for 8th trip this summer
(10) oh and up north is the Halkidiki area and good beaches and resort area....I went to Marmaras 12 days this last summer
Don't know much about the tourism for I am always with my own greek friends and greeks....
Will tell you what my Greek son-in-law told me before my first trip there....When you go...go with an open mind, when you step off the plane...breathe deep and breathe in the life of a Greek....it will get in your soul as it has mine

Hi there from Athens, Greece.
No one will tell you these so:
Be carefull on what you are drinking, prefere drinks that are getting opened in front of you.
Don't be afraid to eat, actually eat as much as you can. Here in Greece we are eatting all the time! Look up for taverns and restaurants that native people go to, because there are a lot of "tourist" taverns which are actually really expensive.
