Richard Dawkins might say we have a selfish gene so we don't become selfish - we ARE selfish! He's got a point even though I don't buy all of his theories. I would call our inherited state 'sin'. It's not that babies do sinful things - it's just that they cannot avoid doing wrong things (which are invariably selfish things) as they develop. There's nothing wrong with a baby, or even a little child, doing things in order to survive, i.e. crying, shouting, grabbing. That's not what I mean by 'sin'. It's those things that appear in later life which show we put our selves first. That selfishness. Selfishness does not actually assure the survival of the human species. It's selflessness that binds us together and works for the greater good.
