Think about it....if a parent dies, the child receives SSI until they're 18. If parents split up, the child is financed through child support. But the children of parnets in prison must fall throught the cracks and remain ignored.
My daughter's father is in prison until 2015. I played no part in this....so why is that me and my daughter are punished? I work full time. The 'system' makes it so that I don't qualify for support, I can't afford to go to school, and I'm stuck!
Why do I take such a big hit in this? I am not a criminal!!!!!

I got divorced, worked full time, and went to college on student loans. I got no hand outs either, nor did I expect any. My ex was not in prison. The point is, if you want to dig yourself out of the hole you are in YOU are the one that needs to pick up the shovel.

The system is not punishing you, and no, you are not a criminal. You plan on staying married to this guy forever? Doesn't seem like he is the proper role model for your daughter. Get a divorce and marry someone who makes the right choices and will love and support your family, rather than be selfish and make stupid decisions and get tossed in jail.

Sorry but you are punished more by society than the government. Society makes the laws and government enforces them. I realize it is torture to both you and your daughter to try to make ends meet and run into walls there are groups that help family's of prisioners like: http://www.fcnetwork.org/ or http://www.childwelfare.gov/famcentered/overview/approaches/prisoners.cfm. Also you might want to try non-traditional education like on the Internet or at a local job resource training center. People in your situation need to be more creative but their are resources to help. Check with your church group if you have one or a community action center. You'll have to do more legwork than some other folks because of the stigma but there are people who care and want to help.

To those who have attacked her based on her husband, she didn't pick him because he was a criminal. Do you seriously think Laci Peterson would have married Scott if she knew he was a psycho? So to speak, he didn't show his *** until after they were married. With that said, I don't understand why. Possibly a deterrent, possibly because they want to punish the entire family. I understand little of what they do for the majority because of the few.

Bum deal...but not sure how you are being "punished" though? The dad sounds like a loser...would he have payed child support on time and everytime if he wasn't in prison?
Why can't you go to school....student loans are available.....or do you only want to go to school if it's free?
Sway-no kids and never married???...WOW now that's a shocker!...lol.

The government is not punishing you. You are simply experiencing the consequences of your own actions.
The government could help you, but it is not required to. This is not punishment.
You are being very selfish expecting the government to use my tax dollars to pay for the consequences of your actions. If you don't like the consequences, then make different choices. Stop playing the victim, and grow up.
There are thousands of charities out there willing to help you, and they will do it without stealing money from me.

You are suggesting that just because your husband is in prison, the American taxpayers must now support you and your daughter? Your analogy about the the parent that died/parent gone to prison is like comparing a stage coach to the space shuttle. It is also like saying taxpayers should support the great great great great great great great grandkids of slaves. There is absolutely no reason for me to support the family of criminals in prison. What you are living is the 'school or hard knocks'. Taxpayers don't owe you or your daughter. Life is tough, and you are going to have to deal with it, not me. What about asking for support from his family? What about asking for support from your own family? What about asking for support from your church? If none of them offer or give support, why should complete strangers having a hard enough time on their own do it?

What are we suppose to do? Let criminals out of prison just because they have kids? OK.......that really makes alot of sense.
Sorry bout your luck, really i am. But if your daughters father did the crime dont blame society for bringing hardships onto your daughter. BLAME HIM. He caused your daughter these hardships. Not me...not the police...not some judge or jury. He did.

This might sound a bit mean, but I am not trying to offend, but you did decide to have a child with someone who commited crimes. We all must bear the consequences of our actions.
I dont have kids, never been married and I still cant afford to go to school either, so why should you be any different that the rest of us?
EDIT - "Normal" people do not do things that get them sentenced to prison.

i think that those in prison are doing it to their children. no offense thats how i see it. commit a crime, do the time no handouts here. sorry
if you cannot even support your child, you might have to put school on the backburner. her welfare comes first. then you. sorry thats what happens when you have children.
