A bill is a simple request for money. "You owe us X money for Y".

An invoice is a more detailed breakdown of the charges incurred and may be presented before or after payment.

Usually none, they are one and the same.
Some offices though send out an invoice which shows current activity on an account, including new charges and applied payments, and what status the account is in - 0-30, 31-60, 61-90, 90+. If they send out a bill, it only shows the current charges which have been applied to the account.

All invoices are bills, but not all bills are invoices. An invoice is a specifically COMMERCIAL document, while a bill is ANY written charge for a product or service, public or private.

they are pretty much one & the same but an invoice shows an itemization.
